Dear
Sir or Madam,
The
Universiti Sains Malaysia and the Leuphana University of Lüneburg cordially
invite you to participate in the 3rd
International Conference on Sustainability in Higher Education, which will take
place in Penang, Malaysia on 20-22
November 2009 (www.hesd09.org).
After
five years of the UN Decade ‚Education for Sustainable Development’ this
conference provides the opportunity to critically reflect on what has been achieved
so far and which tasks and challenges remain to be addressed. Thus, it seems
natural to take stock and consider achievements to date, as well as to identify
tasks and challenges and to highlight promising strategies and solutions. The
central question remains, what value does integrating questions of
sustainability have for teaching and learning in higher education? Education
for sustainable development can be an impulse for innovation to advance
teaching and learning in higher education, at the same time it requires
constant renewal in education for sustainable development itself to meet the
manifold challenges.
The
third international conference - hosted by the UNESCO Chair ‚Higher Education
for Sustainable Development’ in cooperation with the Universiti Sains Malaysia
- is asking for the specific implications for higher education, focusing on
higher education practice, research and teaching/learning. Locating the
regional focus of this year’s conference on the Asia-Pacific region will
continue the international dimension of the conference and will highlight the
intent of cross-cultural dialogue. At the same time, the conference links to
the prior two conferences held in Lüneburg/Germany and San Luis Potosi/Mexico
and continues the discussions among sustainability in higher education
stakeholders.
In
a 3-day program with lectures, workshops, poster presentations and round tables
we will discuss the topic and present state of the art research. Three
corresponding thematic lines focusing on impact, innovation and ways of
mainstreaming HESD will guide the discussions.
We
therefore invite all researchers and higher education institutions committed to
integrating sustainability into their curricula to contribute to the conference
by sharing their experiences and presenting research activities for Sustainable
Development in Higher Education. More information on the Call for Papers, the
conference program and the schedule can be found in the attached brochure and
at www.hesd09.org.
We
sincerely hope to have caught your interest. Looking forward to receiving your
abstracts we remain with our best wishes. On behalf of the organizers,
|
Prof.
Dr. Gerd Michelsen UNESCO
Chair HESD, Head of the Institute for Environmental
and Sustainability Communication, University
of Lüneburg, Germany |
